Continuing on the success of Meg McKenna’s first solo exhibition, Message in a Tree is a thought provoking series of lush oil paintings highlighting the ever present plight of the environment. Choosing to focus on healing, Meg creates a colourful world full of living objects all rooted in organic forms, living, breathing purifiers of land, air and water.
New to this series is the inclusion of what Meg refers to as “Tree Charms”. Inspired by the tradition of the inuksuk, these slim elongated trees branch out at the top of the canvas creating an umbrella over a generously textured landscape. From these branches a web like rope gently cascades suspending a cocoon of various bound organic matter, each charm presenting a unique vision of its creator.
“It is my ability to fantasize within my artistic expression that allows these charms to exist. For me they are a message of what is sacred and meaningful. They are tangible reminders of the beauty that surrounds us and the fragility of nature. They are small tokens borrowed from mother earth and bound together as a private symbol of what we cherish, love and most importantly need to survive here on earth.” (Meg McKenna, 2007)
