Veering away from traditional Chinese art where trees play a supporting role to significant imagery such as mountains, villages or water, Beyond the Trees emphasizes the importance to Wenyun of trees in our natural environment. Beyond the Trees skillfully illustrates how trees transform from a still and majestic state to a loose and fluid performance with the assistance of wind. This is demonstrated with black inked outlines representing a tree’s initial static shape, while contemporary white highlights express movement and spirituality. Notwithstanding Western influences, the source of Wenyun’s creative energy remains deeply grounded in Chinese art practices.
