"Twenty years ago I wrote the following artist statement:

As nature reveals, change is the only constant.  Lakes become swamps, which become meadows, which become forests; plants and animals die and decay.  From those transitions, from those changes comes something new, a rebirth.  But that too is subject to change.  Much of what man does is with the belief that it will be permanent, but all that man does and is, is subject to change.  The marks that man makes, the structures he builds, and the societies that he established, all are subject to change.  Seeing these moments of transition reminds me of our ties to the natural world.  I want to reaffirm these ties by highlighting these moments.

I would now add that even the words that are used to describe these things are also subject to change and changing interpretations.

These thoughts have continued to be an underlying premise of the work that I have made and they continue to resonate in 2009.  I am someone who has worked with glass as one of my primary materials for many years.  It is a substance which requires a great deal of energy to make it malleable, and when physically manipulated by the artist, requires a focus on one’s hands, hence connecting directly to the process of making.  As a society we seem to be facing another moment of transition created by the current combined crises of finance and climate change.  Is this enough momentum to truly consider how we actually live our lives?"
