This exhibition brings together a series of new drawings and sculptures that chronicle some of the quiet moments of the winter months. The drawings take a look at couples attempting to find amusement during a period of hibernation, while the sculptures play on the theme of closed for the season.
In continuation of a style that Robert has been using over the past several years the drawings are moments excerpted from everyday relationships. Figures are shown engaged with each other or sometimes solitary. At times they seem overwhelmed by thought or emotion. They are rendered as pencil drawn portraits, except for their heads which are replaced by hearts, numbers, letters or a combined variety of symbols that float gently or even sometimes erupt from within. The sculptures for this show highlight environments that might have been inhabited by these characters, an environment that sits dormant through the winter months. In a monochromatic palette of greys and whites, the sculptures are a simple extension of the artist’s pencil drawings.
Robert has recently exhibited at the Best of Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition 2008 and the 2009 John B. Aird Juried Drawing Exhibition where he was awarded First Place. His work can be seen in the current issue of Misunderstandings Magazine, Carousel, issue 23, and in an upcoming issue Prism International.
