“It’s difficult for me to pin down one particular idea to describe my work. Although technically consistent, conceptually my work varies a lot. I work with traditional oil painting techniques, but represent a contemporary subject matter. I have always had a deep appreciation of any painting that provides the illusion of volume and depth. When composing my imagery I try not to think of the canvas as a flat surface, but a window to another space. The pursuit of a three dimensional compositional flow is very important to me and varies in intensity depending on the subject matter or idea that I am depicting. For example, the painting ‘Captivate’ depicts two figures in an elevator and the compositional path is very cubic and contained. The eye is lead up and down throughout the painting. Traveling from figure to lights, from back wall to figure creates a slow and eerie sense of anticipation. Conversely, regarding the ‘Experts are standing by’ painting there are ten different compositional anchors, seven figures and three computer screens. This presents so many compositional triangles that the eye has no place to rest comfortably. This contributes to the stressful and unsettling mood of the piece. A perfect example of how I continuously attempt to link together technique, composition and concept.” Paul Turner
